THE
EWE SETTLER Textbooks recommend fifty to seventy ewes per mature ram. Some rams can successfully cover many more. The following is the tally of one White Dorper Ewe Settler:

November-December 98 pasture bred

Spent the summer with 120 of the above ewe nursing lambs on
pasture. 25 ewes were
culled. Ewes lambed
late December 99 to early February 00.

October 99 ram was put with 290 ewes on 300 acres. All ewes lambed; 284 within 30 days (averaged 9.5 ewes settled per day.)

Total ewes bred in 11 months with cycling ewes about 120 days of the 11 months |

The first White
Dorpers born here over eight years old and still breeding ewes. |

The buck was placed with 310 ewes this year on the same 300 acre pasture for 45 days. The ram was then moved some distance to a new group of 91 ewes for 35 days. All ewes lambed of the first group in 30 days. Of the second group 84 lambed in less than 30 days. Total ewes lambed -394 out of 401 exposed in 60 days. This is obviously an exceptional ram for the number of ewes he will successfully cover Repeating the previous years results would indicate that it was not an accident. The cost of this ram has been under $3 per live lamb after only two breeding seasons in this flock. In 2001-02 again 300 ewes lambed within 30 days. We do not require buyers to have 400 ewes before purchasing a White Dorper ram from Grants Dorpers. We sell good rams for any size flocks.
